Pickleball Paddle Grips

Pickleball Grip Guide

While they may not be the most glamorous part of a paddle, grips can make or break your game. It’s important to not only pay attention to how easily you can hold your paddle, but also examine how weight, bulk and comfort affect your game. There are many options available if you love how a certain paddle plays but it isn’t feeling right in the hand.

A Quick Note on Grips vs Overgrips

Some people use these terms interchangeably, but they are slightly different. Grips are meant to cover the very core of your paddle—usually pallets made of wood, plastic, a molded foam base, etc. They are made of thick materials and are meant to entirely replace the grip your paddle came with (meaning you would take the original grip off and wrap the base with the new grip).

Overgrips are meant to go on top of your grip. They are very thin and add extra tackiness, absorption or comfort without adding a lot of weight or changing the shape of your grip. You can still use a regular grip on top of your original grip if you do want to change the overall feel of your paddle or add a lot of bulk/weight. Quite a few people do this, but if you’re only looking to alter the tackiness, stick to an overgrip instead. Below you’ll find an overview of the grips and overgrips we currently carry to help decide which might suit you best.

Supreme Overgrip

4

4

N/A

This style is everything an overgrip should be. It is very thin but provides a high amount of tack. Its smooth surface offers a nice feel that doesn’t slip in the hand. The Supreme also comes in three different color bundles so you can choose to add a little extra flair to your paddle or match its design.

Super Soft Grip

1

N/A

3

As the name suggests, this grip is very cushy! It provides great padding for shock absorption. It is the least tacky grip we carry, making it great for players who want solid joint protection but don’t need a stickier feel.

Contour Grip

4

N/A

4

The Contour is GAMMA’s most popular grip, and is frequently used across many brands including well-known manufacturers like Onix and Pro-Lite. It has a high level of tack while providing a nice, thick base for control.

Lite Grip

4

N/A

3

The Lite Grip is very similar to the Contour except for the fact that is does not have stitching and is comparatively thinner. It is still a full size grip, but the Lite is ideal if you want the tackiness of the Contour in a sleeker, smoother design.

Hi-Tech Gel Grip

4

N/A

4

Another grip similar to the Contour, the Hi-Tech Gel Grip features a Zorbicon gel strip that provides additional shock absorption. It is the best grip we carry for players wanting to avoid “pickleball elbow” or tired wrists.

Supreme Power Overgrip

3

4

N/A

The Supreme Power Overgrip is essentially the thicker version of the regular Supreme. It’s a little bit less tacky in comparison, but offers a great way to increase the circumference of your grip without adding too much weight.

Hi-Tech Grip

5

N/A

1

The Hi-Tech Grip is very smooth for those who don’t like a ridged or bumpy surface. It is also the tackiest grip we offer but is rated only 1/5 for cushioning, so it’s best for players that want more control but like to keep their grip size slender.

Choosing the Best Unique Sports Grip

Tourna Tac

The Tourna Tac is an overgrip made to provide a high amount of tackiness for improved paddle handling. It does not have a high amount of moisture absorption, though, so it’s best not used by those concerned with sweaty hands or playing in humid conditions.

Tourna Grip

The Tourna Grip is the moisture absorbent version of the Tourna Tac. With it, you have nothing to fear even on the hottest of summer days. It has a large fan base that has only grown since its creation in 1997.

Softgrip

The Softgrip is super smooth but allows you to prevent slippery hands from ruining your game. Each of the Softgrip bundles actually include enough material for 3 overgrips, or you can layer them for additional bulk.

What a Grip Overgrip

This overgrip is a bit unique in that, instead of wrapping it multiple times, you simply slide it over your grip and clip off the ends. The overgrip creates a tight seal that covers up any fraying or unraveling edges while the outer polyurethane material provides unrivaled tack.

Choosing the Best Viking Grip

DuraTac Overgrip

Viking DuraTac Overgrip is similar to GAMMA’s Supreme. It has a smooth and soft feel while providing high tack. They come in several great colors to improve the look of your paddle as well as its control.

DuraSoft Replacement Grip

The DuraSoft Replacement Grip is exactly what it sounds like – Viking uses their own custom grips on their paddles, and if yours is wearing down but you loved the original feel, this will be the solution to your problems.

ResiThin Replacement Grip

Just like the DuraSoft grip, the ResiThin is made to replace the original grip used on a Viking paddle. In comparison, it is thinner and lighter than the DuraSoft unless you choose to build your grip up with multiple layers.
